Hillary Refuses To Wear The 'Silly Shirt' At Mexico G-20

The UK Daily Mail has been all over this sartorial scandal:

Wearing a lime green shirt, the Secretary of State was placed in the middle of the foreign ministers - all dressed in crisp white shirts - for a G20 'family photo' in Los Cabos, Mexico.

-- snip --
For the photograph, Clinton was joined by leaders including the EU's foreign policy representative Baroness Catherine Ashton, Mexico's Patricia Espinose and South Africa's Maite Nkoana-Mashabane.

But it was an outfit not unexpected from the Secretary of State, known for her loud-coloured, boxy jacket and trouser suit combinations.

She raised eyebrows on a state visit to Barbados in June 2010 when she chose a gaudy bright orange trouser suit to meet the country's vice president.

Her questionable fashion choices led Project Runway's Tim Gunn to ask the following year: 'Why must she dress that way? I think she's confused about her gender. All these big, baggy menswear tailored pantsuits? I'm really serious.'

-- snip --
The Department of State was unable to identify a dress code which the Secretary of State had missed.

Why didn't the State spokesman tell the press that we in the U.S. of A. have a native dress code that proscribes wearing white after Labor Day? That might have been better than nothing.

What a bunch of wet blankets we have in this administration! First it was Obama, refusing to do a 'silly shirt' group photo at all as host of the Pacific economic summit conference, and now Hillary refusing to put on a Guayabara shirt.

So strange, especially when you remember how her husband was always the life of the party. I don't understand why none of his joyously unrestrained behavior has ever rubbed off on her. Aren't long-term couples supposed to resemble each other?

TSB:You keep posing the toughest questions!! I think Obama and Hillary agree that unless they be seen as "sartoriorly splendorous" they risk looking ridiculous and all presidential hopes will be lost. I'd like to know how many advisors were willing to tell "H" how awful that thing looks? gwb

TSB: I think you traumatized her with that recent post from the Wellesly Days. You better stop it or you won't get that World Bank guard job! gwb

A CNN/ Gallup poll shows that nearly three quarters of Americans believe that Iran already has a nuclear weapon. (About 80% believe that it either has one or will get one in short order).
TSB: When Stalin's census board reported that the population was actually falling because he was killing so many people he had them shot. That guy could really fear monger! On the other hand, he didn't have "Wolf Blitzer"! gwb

TSB: Baylor U just got $125 mill to study the effects of multiple deployments on soldiers. My prediction: Multiple deployments cause massive anger not amenable to anger management, stop suicide posters, prescription drugs or binge drinking. They will probably also recommend a larger study! gwb
(Did you notice they have resurrected 15 yr retirement for soldiers with crappy attitudes?)

TSB: I didn't know about this until it was half over but last nite they held the D-20 on CNN. I forced myself to watch some of it and it looks to me like Paul is cozying up with the richest devil.
With a Romney-Paul ticket we could at least have some great entertainment beating Obama and then after the election listening to RP say "I don't get invited to many meetings around here" but going out as VP is nice! What are the odds on that? gwb

It took me completely by surprise when RP mentioned how happy he would be if Romney asked him to join his ticket. I suppose stranger things have happened in politics, but that ticket would be way up there on the strange-o-meter.

Frankly, the long-sleeve Mexican white guayabera is the _least_ "silly" shirt I've seen yet. The SecState should have gone for it.

TSB said...

Agree. I know that many, many, Mexicans and Central Americans think the Guayabera is almost never flattering on anybody. But, it could have something way worse.

I am ready for a "strange-o-meter"
administration!! Who would be your choice for Secy of State? I'd like to see John Huntsman out tooling around DC with Ron Paul on their bikes! (They could even take that photo op international!) And who would qualify as a strange-0-meter
token billionairess? gwb

I'd back anyone for SecState who promised to appoint Chuck Norris Chief of Protocol. Chuck would keep the foreign diplomats in line.

Well, it _is_ a man's article of clothing, not a woman's. Perhaps Sec. Clinton made the right call.

That's an excelent point. Maybe Hillary wanted to show that Tim Gunn guy that he's wrong, and she does know her gender, after all?

TSB: I thought the most important Hillary news this past week was her statement about the election in Yemen. After a whole year of supporting Saleh's killing his own people daily he ends up doing exactly what he said he would: kill all opposition until he decides to go (To the US) And for the Yemenis? The get to "elect" the 2nd in command. That is some great anti-terrorist foreign policy! gwb

Hogs going wild in Pakistani capital: Gun control advocates listen up! Everybody needs at least a 22 rifle and some training!

GWB: What a hunting paradise! But the Pakistani Muslims won't touch them, of course, and they won't trust Christians and Hindus with rifles.

I say the U.S. military ought to win hearts and minds by bringing over a regiment of Southern National Guard troops to clean up. Imagine the good will we'd earn! Note to self: call ISAF.

Good thinkin TSB! Send that suggestion right up the chain so the Commander in Chief can get the credit. gwb
