TSB: It looks like bulldozers, trucks, rail stock and cars aren't the only things collapsing. Now its airplanes! gwb
snip-
Then, over the weekend, we got a glimpse into the real "price" of airplanes, when Iran said on Sunday it had negotiated to pay only about half the announced price for 80 new Boeing airliners in an order that Boeing had previously said was worth $16.6 billion. The sale includes 50 twin-jet, narrow-body 737 planes and 30 long-range, wide-body 777 aircraft. The first airplanes are scheduled for delivery in 2018, with the entire order being fulfilled over 10 years.

"Boeing has announced that its IranAir contract is worth $16.6 billion. However, considering the nature of our order and its choice possibilities, the purchase contract for 80 Boeing aircraft is worth about 50 percent of that amount," said Deputy Transport Minister Asghar Fakhrieh-Kashan, quoted by Iran's IRNA state news agency.

Then there is the question of how much funding the Ex-Im bank may have provided to Iran: when all is said and done, it is possible that the Persian nation ended up paying nothing out of pocket, and merely funded its purchase of Boeing airplanes with a generous loan from Uncle Sam.

As part of Iran's return to a post-sanctions world, Boeing and Airbus both signed huge contracts this month to supply airliners to Iran, the first such deals since international sanctions were lifted under a deal to curb Tehran's nuclear program.

PS: Delta has been buying 10 yr old 777's for $10 million each. How come we don't get to know how much the Ex/IM Bank put up for the Iran Deal?? Well, I suppose avoiding nuclear war was worth it?? Who needs that on top of world wide economic collapse!

GWB: I suppose Iran could just be dickering. If I were Iran, I'd buy Airbus after using Boeing for negotiating leverage. The Art of the Deal, you know.

TSB: Did you know Papandreau sold Greece down the river after Jamey Dimon and Lloyd Blankfein flew to Athens for a meeting?? They offered him 500 million Euros to do it and the money was later found in his mother-in-law's Swiss bank accountant. I don't know where he is now but probably not in her basement. gwb

TSB: That Dam article by Dexter Filkins is a fantastic update. I thought the comment: "US had no contact with Iraqi officials for 5 years" was amazing. I guess this was a big part of the big US involvement in trying to retake Mosul. And the Italian firm unable to afford the huge kickback for emergency work last January? was telling. 2017 looks like the year the Iraq war chickens will come home to roost. I wonder what an epic disaster like that will do to the oil fields? gwb

GWB: If the Mosul dam fails it will be an epic disaster. The USACE has warned and warned and warned them, but we'll probably be blamed anyway.

TSB: Prediction: The Mosul dam failure this spring will end up being what ran ISIS out of Iraq and Trump will send the US Army Bass Fishing Team in to round up the stragglers and take credit for as his first campaign promise made good! And don't forget, Energy Secy Perry knows a lot about man made lakes! gwb

TSB: Lots of fuss about the UN Resolution. I don't get it? Obama just gave Bibi $38 billion.
(He must hate him.) Not to mention Isreal has universal public healthcare. I remember the days when we used to fuss about giving them $2 billion a year and we could afford healthcare. gwb

I've been reading The Generals: Patton, MacArthur, Marshall, and the Winning of World War II by Winston Groom It's the first time I've been able to understand exactly what these guys did that was so brilliant. Particularly MacArthur's decisions when he invaded the Phillipines. I had never even heard of how he talked (beat up is a better word) Adm.Kincaid (into providing cover with Taffy 3 for invading the island of Mindoro so they could build airstrips to support the invasion of Luzon. That proved to be critical. We only lost 10,000 dead in taking Luzon. great book! gwb
