Serena Hotel Video Shows Security Screening

The news media have obtained several minutes of security video from the Serena Hotel which shows the four attackers in yesterday's assault being screened and searched as they entered the hotel. They were patted down when they first entered the perimeter of the hotel grounds, then they were passed through a metal detector, after which they were patted down again.

The video was first released by Ariana TV news a few hours ago. However, it seems to have since disappeared from their website.

The physical pat-downs looked like they were performed competently, and included a search of the lower legs and ankle region. That would not have been enough to discover pistols concealed inside the shoes the four wore, so the big question remains whether or not the hotel's walk-through metal detector was working. Unfortunately, the video tells us nothing about that.

I watched that vid a lot. They sure walked very naturally. The picture of the shoes is iffy, because of perspective ( the old look how big this fish, snake, etc is). I also noticed a flash at the end of the vid.

James: The full video is several minutes longer than the clip I embedded, and it shows the entire entrance screening process plus several some shooting in the hotel corridor, which happens right before the attackers are killed. I believe the flash near the end is reflected light from a high-intensity flashlight, maybe one mounted on a rifle, used by the responding police or military.

I watched the full video on the Wall Street Journal online, but for some reason it wouldn't embed, so I used the short version from CNN.

If you saw the whole entry footage what's your opinion of their walking?

I didn't notice any unusual gait, or other indications that they were walking on top of those mouse guns. The pistols were only just over 3/4 inches thick (if they were typical for .25 calibers) and reportedly were wrapped up, which I suppose would have cushioned them a bit.

But I am curious about how they could also carry loose ammo and extra pistol magazines, all in their shoes, undetected. Maybe they did, or maybe they had been to the hotel before and stashed some of the weapons then, or maybe someone else stashed them there.

Especially with the last one making his stand in the bathroom. It's possible that if there was a pre-attack stash there, he returned to it for the old last stand.

Wrapped or not they are inflexible, so even of small size they couldn't be under the feet without affecting the walking gait noticeably. I also noticed 5 pairs of shoes in the photo.

TSB: What's goin on here? It sounds like the Isreali State Dept is having a 'shekel fit'?? gwb

TSB said...

GWB: They've unionized, the whole country has a socialist origin and ethos, and the diplomats have gone on strike. They did it at least once before, but this time is broader - all Israeli diplomatic missions in the world are closed, except for some vital assistance to citizens.

The diplomat's collective bargaining unit in the U.S. must be green with envy. Those Israelis are living the dream!

Didn't know about the Diplos! If you live long enough!

TSB:James; I'll put 5 shekels on a mid-week settlement and a 25% pay raise for the courageous Isreali diplos. Also, I favor a US State worldwide walkout to free

James: Dreaming big is one thing but taking $$ from young guys on the pool tables... Those were the days!
You are living the dream! I'd like to know how long TSB thinks Isreal can go with all it's diplos on strike. gwb

James: Maybe the Secret Service should drop that requirement of being a binge drinker or at least have a buddy system to drag these guys back inside their rooms. gwb

Now GWB, let's not be hasty. Perhaps there are mitigating circumstances such as who they're guarding, and therefore they must do this to cope with the job.

That is a good point James! I heard it was the youngest guy on the team who was found in the hall so maybe he was the victim of some 'competitive spirits'? I'm intrigued by the Isreali diplostrike and how low their pay is. ($2000 a month after a 20% increase?) I wonder how that compares with our avg. diplopay? TSB: know anyone blogging about this extraordinary event? gwb

Wow TSB! Quite a windfall for Tymoshenko and the gang. I don't see Christine LaGuarde in the story so I guess she will be keeping her distance from this one. Nobody wants to be in the 1st paragraph on the history of WWIII. gwb

GEB: The Israeli diplomats are still on strike, but not many people outside Israel (and Israelis abroad) are effected, and nobody is paying much attention. I don't know about their average pay, but I did read that about one third of their service members resign before ten years. I assume that kind of turnover indicates poor morale and poor conditions.

Satellite images that have been followed up on have not produced any sightings for search teams, said Young of the Australian maritime authority. "That may change in the future," he added.

Stephen Wood, a cia satellite image expert said the satellites could be seeing something as simple as whitecaps, which he said can look deceptively like solid objects. (TSB: The US Navy is not exactly demonstrating a great ability to find anything on the surface of the ocean if they can't tell the difference between whitecaps and solid objects. I'm expecting them to shut this search down pretty soon out of pure embarrassment. gwb)

TSB: Today they say Putin has 100,000 troops on the border of Ukraine. That's a 70,000 increase in 1 day! Sounds like he's about to invoke the 'Powell Doctrine' and take whatever he wants.. but maybe without firing a shot. The Ukranians are digging trenches full of $100 bills to slow them down. gwb
