I Was So Much Older Then

Apropos of nothing, except that I've been listening to it on my iPod while flying back from TDY today, this is from Bob Dylan's 30th anniversary concert.

Dylan wrote My Back Pages in 1964 to step away from the more strident kind of protest song.

Good and bad, I define these terms
Quite clear, no doubt, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

The Byrds did a popular cover version, but it didn't include all six versus. Dylan, of course, recorded the full version, but, frankly, his rendition is too eccentric for me. This collaborative version is the best of both worlds - you get the entire song, and you can understand the words.

TSB: It looks like I was wrong about the apple picking problem in WA.
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/dannywestneat/2016582976_danny23.html

This reporter found there were about 1000 workers needed last week and could only find 2 gringos who actually went to take the job. They could only make $50/ day vs. $120-$150 for an experienced Mexican. It's hard work and skill counts!

The apple growers are doing their annual sympathy dance to maintain their essentially feudal business model. They exploit illegal Mexican peasant labor to do work that ought to be mechanized, and leave the taxpayer to pick up the very considerable costs for their serfs. I guess it's a hybrid of feudalism and socialism.

Mechanical harvesting is the right way to go, economically, politically, technically, and out of humane concern for the peasants involved. But the growers lobby, and the illegal alien lobby (which is welcomed by both major parties), have been able to impede efforts to increase mechanization.

For example, the last federal government engineer conducting research on mechanical harvesting of fruit crops retired in 2005, about 25 years after the USDA stopped funding research on mechanization.

Personally, I hope Washington loses its apple business to places like New Zealand. The growers have no regard for our national interests, why should the Feds do anything for the growers?

TSB: Thanks for the article! I see what you mean. WSU (my alma mater) has done a lot of great stuff over the years for ag improvement. I worked ER in apple country for a couple years and share your sentiments about that industry doing little for Washington State. gwb

Yemeni warplane crashes in southern province of Lahej, 9 reported killed

TSB: What is the only operational An-225 doing in Yemen (destroyed)??gwb

GWB,

The IED modules are an example of civilian communications equipment - not controlled by U.S. law - being used for malicious purposes. The WaPo could come up with a long list of those examples, if they wanted to.

They might also object to the many illegal transfers of aeorospace technology to China by Boeing, Huges, Loral, and Lockheed Martin:

http://www.nytimes.com/2003/01/01/international/asia/01EXPO.html

Those dodgy transfers involved Clinton financial contributors, of course:

http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/1998/05/25/time/china.missles.html

The IED modules were sold during the Bush administration and no Democrats were invloved, so we are free to be outraged at that.

Yes! I continue outraged. Did you see diplopundit's hilarious post? That blogger he is talking about has the best humor around! That crash in Yemen was a small transport plane. gwb
