Hillary Benefits From Presidental Buyer's Remorse

There is no reason to think Hillary Clinton will run for President again - she has said she won't - but, if she does, it looks like she would have a surprising level of support. According to a recent Bloomberg National Poll, Hillary is now the most popular politician in America:

The most popular national political figure in America today is one who was rejected by her own party three years ago: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Nearly two-thirds of Americans hold a favorable view of her and one-third are suffering a form of buyer’s remorse, saying the U.S. would be better off now if she had become president in 2008 instead of Barack Obama.

The finding in the latest Bloomberg National Poll shows a higher level of wishful thinking about a Hillary Clinton presidency than when a similar question was asked in July 2010. Then, a quarter of Americans held such a view.

And take a look at where some of that wishful thinking is coming from:

Republicans are slightly more inclined than the national average to think the U.S. would be better off with Clinton running the country, with 39 percent saying so. A majority of Democrats -- 57 percent -- say things would be the same.

-- snip --

A plurality of Tea Party supporters -- 44 percent -- say the U.S. would be better off with Hillary Clinton as president, even though 59 percent of those respondents have an unfavorable impression of her.

The Rasmussen Presidential Tracking Poll currently has Obama at 43% "strongly disapprove" to 23% "strongly approve." Approval is even lower among independent voters.

Apparently, Hillary has benefited big-time by having been sequestered from domestic politics as SecState during the Obama administration.

It looks like there is agreement all around, then. She ought to run in 2012. We already know she'll have Dick Chenney's vote.

TSB: Now look what you've started. Do you have any helpful advice for the President? gwb

Why Obama should withdraw
Steve ChapmanWhen Ronald Reagan ran for re-election in 1984, his slogan was "Morning in America." For Barack Obama, it's more like midnight in a coal mine.

The sputtering economy is about to stall out, unemployment is high, his jobs program may not pass, foreclosures are rampant and the poor guy can't even sneak a cigarette.

Obama doesn't need my advice, but if he asked, I'd say try to time his manic-depressive cycle so that he catches a manic phase right before the election.

I expect he'll get re-elected. Most politicians from both parties are afraid to challenge him in any meaningful way.

Palin is getting a serious re-look by some people - like Ralph Nader -after her "crony capitalism" speech. I woud welcome a real populist candidate.

I think I voted for Nader once but I can't remember which election. I thought he was a commie? This Mr. Butters though takes me back to the 80's. If they can just teach him some
70's stuff and add Emmy Lou Harris' guitar player I think he could win the boomer vote.

Nader was never a commie; that would require following Party discipline. He's an honest left-populist.

Does this Mr. Butters have a position on illegal immigration?

"Mr.Butters" is a total non-candidate, which seems to be a requirement for high poll numbers. He seems to be very disciplined though so I think he would at least be for e-verify. His corporate backer is Geico. I'm pretty sure he will be shut out of the debates, but just showing up at one and sitting there in his kennel would steal the show. gwb

Just kidding TSB, about Ralph. I always admired his life story and using hard work and facts to go against our corporate overlords. It was his main stream opponents that called him a commie! He has really worked for a country where everyone has an opportunity and liberty. (Ron Paul too!) gwb

I like any third party candidate as a rule, but I must say I've gained strange new respect for Nader.
