My Kind Of Town
Also known as: the City on the Make, Hog Butcher for the World, Paris on the Prairie, and - my favorite - the Miami of Canada.
I'm working in Chicago tonight, on my first trip ever to the city, and I must say I am loving the place. Yesterday, I walked past blocks and blocks of wonderful architecture on Michigan Avenue, and tonight I found this red brick Victorian Gothic building of "luxury flats" from 1882.
It's a historical landmark building, one of the first significant pieces to be completed after the Great Fire, and today it contains a Starbucks (of course). I am all over that like white on rice.

Great post TSB! I love those old buildens! gwb
You're their in the right time of the year too! Lovely fall days - don't forget to pick up some Chicago style pizza after your Starbucks!
Yes, the temperature is just right. And I did go for deep-dish pizza at a place off Michigan Avenue, and it was worth the hour and a half wait!
TSB: Juan Cole has been pushing for a long time the idea that Karzai suffers from some mental disorder. I disagree. It seems to me for 10 years he has artfully played us for fools with $$$ in a land of thieves. What do you think? Is he crazy or are we? gwb
GWB, I think some people with first-hand experience of Karzai have made remarks about his being on or off his meds. But what's new? We supported President Aristide in Haiti for many years, and he was obviously psycho. If Karzai is the only political game in town, the USG won't ask for a mental exam.
About Aristide, I helped train some of his people to secure his office and residence when he was returned to power. The guy creeped me out with this habit of never - but never - blinking. Is that trait some kind of a psychological indicator?
Lol!TSB... If that was 1994 you evidently did a great job! That guy certainly has been dedicated to the poor and getting crosswise with the Pope over "Duvalierism" qualifies him as a hero of mine! I wonder if that St.Jean Bosco massacre of 1988 didn't just knock the blink reflex out of him? Did you know he learned to speak Zulu in South Africa? gwb
