TSB: Here are my nominations: It sounds like all you need to beat all this security is either brains or persistence! .. oh, and 2000 dead soldiers in Afghanistan, 1000 of them under Obama. gwb

GWB: Agree! In fact, I almost used that geriatric peace-protestors story. It got better yesterday, when the Y-12 plant fired the security guard who was first on the scene (the illegal entry was not his fault, but he failed to stupidly overreact and pepper-spray or tase the old nun).

Another good one I let go was about a drunken New Yorker whose jet-ski broke down in the river next to Kennedy airport, after which he climbed over the airport's perimeter fence and walked past its multimillion dollar security sensor and camera network at arrive at one of the terminals undetected.

Sometimes I don't know why people go to movies when there is such good entertainment in real life.

Gary Touchman of CNN reports on the storm preparations in Haiti. Sort of reminds me of the German approach with the jews: They will figure it out soon enough! gwb

Dealing with snakes here in Texas, we prefer a less direct approach (sticks, guns, cars, etc.) than the Rikki Tikki Tavi method.

TSB: A little different take on the attack of diplomatic vehicle from blogo de narco:

It sounds like the "diplomats" are trying to cover up a kidnapping attempt?? gwb

TSB: The truth keeps dribbling out about the neo cons attempts to gin up a war with Iran: We should have a "Gwynneth Todd Day" !! It's clear to me Obama never had the guts to take on Dick Cheney's clique. gwb

CNN continues to imply that only one vehicle was attacking the other while it seems there may have been 3 or 4. gwb

GWB: Who knows for sure right now, but my guess is that the attack on that embassy vehicle was not a kidnapping attempt, or even a planned ambush. That was my first assumption, but this incident took place on a long straight road with open level ground on both sides, and it doesn't look like there was any attempt to fix the vehicle in place before opening fire. Photos of the vehicle show a little body damage on one front corner, but it doesn't look like it was used to ram anything.

The number of Mexican vehicles reported to be involved is tantalizingly vague. Both narcos and Federal police were there and shooting, and it can be hard to know when the Feds are playing for the other team (as at the Mexico City airport). Mexican news media say that 12 Federal police were relieved of duty, and all further official press releases on this incident must come from the office of the President.

There are two living witnesses who aren't subject to Mexican control, so I expect we will eventually get a straight story.

Yes, It sounds like the Mexican Navy came to the rescue and the Federales were out to end the recent improvement in coordination between the US and Mexico that seems to have resulted in a lot of high level arrests. I'd like to know what kind of guns made those big holes! gwb

GWB: I read that Juan Cole piece on Iran and Neo-Con conspiracies, thanks. I can easily believe reports of back-biting and selective leaking and so on that are motivated by U.S. government inter- and intra-agency politics, but I don't think those things amount to much.

I can't understand why a Cheney henchman would order an Admiral to provoke a war with Iran in order to head off a purported State Department attempt to open some negotiations. The White House is 100 percent in charge of both our military and diplomatic policies. Why use such illegal and unpredictable plots when the White House could simply order what it wants in the first place?

I hadn't hear of that Navy analyst before, however, if it is true that she had a boyfriend who did illegal consulting for Sudan, and/or if she received any sum of money, no matter how small, from his lobbying efforts, then she needed to have her clearance removed. I remember Karen Kwiatkowsky, and she was just someone capitalizing on her day job in the Pentagon to promote her personal political views; which is fine by me, provided she leaves her day job first. Cole threw in The Notorious Case Of Secret Agent Valerie Plame for good measure, but he evidently forgot that her CIA employment was exposed to the news media not by Cheney's guy Scooter Libby, but rather by Colin Powell's deputy Richard Armitage. Both Powell and Armitage lied their assess off and let Libby take the blame.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/right-turn/post/colin-powells-cheap-shot/2011/03/29/gIQA2Q0smJ_blog.html

The myth that Libby (meaning, really Cheney) did it is so politically convenient that it has become an established factoid. But it remains an untruthitude.

All this theorizing about purported conspiracies from years ago seems to be just Cole's way of warning that Romney's foreign policy is influenced by Neo-Con types. I suppose it is, since, for example, Dan Senor is his senior foreign policy adviser. I'd rather that Cole said as much directly. The deep, dark, conspiracy stuff detracts from his otherwise credible academic-type commentary.

Good points TSB: Juan tends to stray on this story. I think because the WH did sick the FBI on him in a successful effort to take him out of the national discussion. That was 2007 and Juan hasn't been on the tv since about 2009. gwb

TSB: Here are some real Washington state terrorists with some big plans including a great funding and recruitment scheme. What I find "consistent" here is the Army's PC culture... just wash our hands of the whole thing! gwb

That kid was Washington State's representative to "Boy's Nation" in 2008, attended a presidential debate and thought Obamacare "made no sense".
super patriotic leadership training + military training + unlimited access to weapons + disillusioned soldiers = a uniquely American phenomenon! I don't know what to call it but the psychiatry report is going to be interesting. gwb

TSB: Here's an idea. Take this great post: http://wemeantwell.com/blog/2012/08/29/use-the-twitter-to-find-wmds-win-10000/

Give it to "A Daring Adventure"
Hook her up with that Nun who cracked national security.... and then see if she can find some WMD in Chengdu.. They must have lots of it hanging around there! The blog posts alone would be "worth the risk!" (I will deny I ever suggested this!) gwb

That win-big-money-for-WMD-apps contest is just exceptionally weird. I don't have a clue where that came from or what it's supposed to do. Ah, this is not the USG's best day.

Time for the US to step up and help? I think so. Safe transport and a choice of destinations/accomodations is in order for these people. gwb

TSB said...

GWB: The refugees from Afghanistan must be overwhelmingly Pashtun, and they won't want to go anywhere but back to the Pashtun belt across the border in Afghanistan. Once we're gone from there and peace breaks out, what's to keep them in Pakistan?

TSB: I've been wondering why M. Dowd's columns have been so weak the past year or so. It looks like NYT has been sending them to the CIA for "fact checking". Putin will get a chuckle out of this! gwb

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/aug/29/mark-mazzetti-maureen-dowd-cia-new-york-times?intcmp=239
"Last August, Maureen Dowd asked Mark Mazzetti to help check a fact for her column. In the course of doing so, he sent the entire column to a CIA spokeswoman shortly before her deadline. He did this without the knowledge of Ms Dowd. This action was a mistake that is not consistent with New York Times standards."

I keep forgetting the guy is 80 years old. Who has done a better job of embarrassing the adminsistration? gwb

I've liked Sheriff Joe ever since I heard him say to an ex-prisoner who was complaining about the conditions, "if you don't like my prison, don't come back." Plain speech like that is getting rare.
